Statue of Bangdel placed in Khotang

BY RAJ KUMAR BHATTARAI,Khotang, Feb.1: A statue of noted artist and litterateur Lain Singh Bangdel which was in an abandoned state for the past 11 years in Khotang because of various disputes has now been kept in a park. Initially, the statue was built to place in Diktel. 

The statue was placed in the park of Benesen, Sukrabare Danda of Rakhabangdel in Ainselukharka Rural Municipality. 

Rakhabangdel is the ancestral home of artist Bangdel. Ward chair Purushottam Rajbhandari informed that the ward office had built the Lain Singh Bangdel Park at a cost of  Rs. 200,000.

Shyam Gautam, a sculptor from Belbari, in Morang, made the bust of Bangdel and handed it over to the then District Development Committee (DDC) in 2010. 

The sculpture of Bangdel, abandoned in a disgraceful manner in front of a hotel in Diktel, was taken to Rakhabagndel in 2016.  Former Ainselu Village Development Committee (VDC) had managed expense to transport the bust from Diktel. 

The former VDC had handed Rs. 30,000 to Gautam as a transportation fare. Earlier, former DDC and political leaders had decided to place the statue near Ratna Park in Diktel. 

Agam Singh Rai of Rakhabangdel said that earlier discussions were held to place the statue on the premises of the District Coordination Committee in Diktel. Lain Singh Bangdel Road has also been built in Rakhabangdel in memory of the great artist. 

The Lain Singh Bangdel road connecting Rawakhola Dhunge-Badusko-Rakhabangdel Sorsu-Bahanepokhari-Sibdu was constructed with the conditional grant provided by the Province 1 government to the local government in the Fiscal Year 2018/19.
