Tulsipur (Dang), Dec 4: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, has underlined the need to create an enabling atmosphere for women journalists to retain them in the profession.
Inaugurating a province-level training for enhancement of the professional competency of female journalists at Bhalubang of Dang on Monday, Minister Sharma expressed her concerns over the issue of retention of female journalists in Nepal.
In the event organised by the Press Council Nepal, Sharma, also the government Spokesperson, said it was concerning that female journalists face challenges to remain in the field for long. "Capacity enhancement and more opportunities targeting women journalists are necessary to address the issue."
She took time to say that despite the constitutional provisions mandating 33 per cent of women's participation in every sector, the women journalists in Nepal just made up 20 per cent, advising the authorities concerned to come up with more measures to attract new women journalists to the field.
The Information Minister utilised the forum to insist on the right use of available technology to promote digital safety. She also underlined the need to incorporate a session on cyber literacy in the training, pledging to reach out to districts with such types of events seeking wider participation in the days to come.
