Foreign films flourish, local ones fail to earn

By A Staff Reporter Kathmandu, May. 10: Nepali film industry has resumed its business after the end of third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in terms of collection there is no place to be satisfied. 

Although South Indian movies and Hollywood movies have been continuously luring local audience to the halls, Nepali movies have not been able to draw the crowd in the 

movie theatres.

Four Nepali films have been released in the halls since the New Year Day (April 14). But they failed to do the desired business. 

A Mero Hajur- 4, directed by actress Jharna Thapa, was released in the domestic cinema theatres on the New Year Day. It is still being screened. However, they gave contradicting figure regarding its collection. 

Another movie, Mantra, starred by Saughat Malla was released on April 29. But this film failed to attract the audience to the hall.

Last Friday, two Nepali films Shatkon and Lakka Jawan, and Hollywood film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were released in the local theatres.  

 However, the   murder mystery film Shatkon has already been lifted from the multiplexes within three days of its release. But Hollywood film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is drawing crowd of Nepali audience. 

Along with the Hollywood film, South Indian films KGF 2 and RRR still dominating the Nepali box office. But no local film except for  A Mero Hajur – 4 could survive more than a week in the halls.

 Shatkon starred by actor Karma shows the ups and downs of an investigation of a murder mystery. The film is based on investigative journalism. This is a debut film of Milan De Capri as a director. 

Along with Karma, Bhola Raj Sapkota, Lokendra Lekhak, Suyasha Adhikari, Biraj Kadariya, Shishir Limbu and child actor Asim Lama have done the movie.

 Multi-starrer comedy film Lakka Jawan is written and directed by comedian Shiva Hari Poudel and this film featured most of the well-known small screen actors.

About 40 comedians are featured in the film. 

 Shiva Hari Poudel, Kiran KC, Dilip Rayamajhi, Rajaram Poudel, Salon Basnet, Priyanka Karki, Barsha 

Siwakoti among others have done the film.  But it also has been unable to attract audience. Even it is  screened in limited 

multiplexes.
