Kathmandu, Nov 3 : National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) released 10 captive white-rumped vultures into the wild on Tuesday.

The vultures were transferred from the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBN) in Kasara to the release aviary at the Jatayu Vulture Restaurant in Pithauli seven months ago, according to an NTNC press statement.

The vultures were released in the presence of Ajay Karki, Deputy Director General at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), Dr. Naresh Subedi, programme manager at NTNC, chief warden of Chitwan National Park, divisional forest officer of Nawalpur, ward chairperson and buffer zone user committee chair among other stakeholders.

The NTNC has been supporting vulture breeding since the establishment of the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBC) in 2008. The centre was established and brought into operation in a joint collaboration with DNPWC, NTNC, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN), and the Zoological Society of London.

Including these 10, a total of 59 vultures have been released into the wild to date. The other 10 remaining vultures at the VCBC will be moved to the vulture release aviary soon.
