By Chitra Mijar,Sindhupalchowk, May 2: Helambu Rural Municipality has initiated the conservation of the Chauri (yak), which is on verge of disappearance. Nima Gyaljen Sherpa, Chairperson of the rural municipality, said that the yak population had been dwindling recently, so the rural municipality had introduced various programmes to protect the yak.

Yaks can still be sighted in Melamchi Ghyang and other locations in the upper regions of Helambu. However, in the lower regions, they are facing the threat of extinction.

So, the rural municipality is actively working to protect the yak population, Sherpa said.

Sherpa informed that the rural municipality had started the annual task of relocating the yaks to the upper region.

He said that increasing the number of yaks would attract more domestic and foreign visitors to the tourist town of Helambu, which is also the residential area of the Hyolmo community.

Helambu is known as the village of monasteries and is rich in natural and cultural significance and beauty.
