In today’s changing world, countries have to deal with key issues such as climate change, human rights violation and terrorism effectively as have posed threats to the humanity. Not even a week has passed since a terrorist attack took place in Moscow of Russia. Apparently, a concert hall located near Moscow was attacked. As of now, more than 140 people are reported to have lost their lives to gunmen who had entered the complex and fired guns indiscriminately. And more than 100 have sustained injuries in the incident. The Islamic State has taken the responsibility for the attack stating that four of its members had carried out the heinous assault.

The four gunmen had used flammable liquid to set fire to the hall premises. The Russian police have arrested nearly one dozen individuals on charge of the act of terrorism. Of them, four are suspected to be directly linked to the case. The attack was carried out by Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) primarily a regional branch of the group carrying out its activities in the South-Central Asian region, namely, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This group was also behind the bombing at the Kabul airport.

The United States is said to have warned Russia about a potential attack targeting large masses by the terrorist group. However, the latter had dismissed that warning. Terrorist attacks are no more local and national level. They have transcended beyond borders making it more complex and difficult to control. Terrorist activities are organised crimes aimed at causing threat and violence to a huge mass.

The reason why such crimes happen is complex in nature. Poverty and unemployment can cause a certain section of the society to be against government authorities. Also religious and political reasons have fuelled terrorism activities. A lack of cohesion within the society can bring about violent behaviour. Because terrorism is no longer limited within a nation, terrorist groups are found attacking nations they believe are against them. The resentment caused by historical events has also pushed terrorist groups to cause violence.

Ferocious terrorist attacks have taken place over the years affecting African, South-East Asian, North American and European regions. The acts of terrorism are found affecting the overall development of a country and their people. Infrastructures are destroyed and socio-economic instability emerges, making the government and the country weak. In a state of fear and terror, it is also equally tough to take foreign investors into confidence and welcome investments to the country when there is a possibility of such violence.

While the complete eradication of terrorism could be impossible, governments can make efforts to control terrorist attacks. Strict monitoring and better border security can help to an extent. Also tackling the root causes of the issue is essential. Because there is a huge difference in the relations between different countries and communities, fostering social unity is key. It is crucial that countries around the globe join hands to fight rising terrorism activities. In order to maintain international peace and security, efforts have to be made on various fronts.

As nations are parties to different international treaties and agreements concerning this heinous crime, it is important that commitments are fulfilled. Because terrorism is a direct attack on the notion of human rights, its continuity and deepening hold onto society. Nations must strive for forging collaborations to eliminate terrorism and make the world a safer place to live in.
